The magic beans

This week, with a little delay, we reach position number three of our “different” aircrafts list. This rank is for the McDonell XG-85 “Globin”. This strange aircraft was a parasite fighter created to protect the B36 being transported in its interior. The USAF’s idea was that this fighter could escort the bomber which carried it in case of a foe attack.

The XF-85 was a tiny egg shaped craft with peculiar stabilizers. It was build and tested in 1948 but the performances were lower than the foe fighters. This fact and the enormous difficulty of the reattachment to the host aircraft caused the abandonment of the project.

There were two prototypes built, that flew seven times with a total flight time of 2 hours and 19 minutes. Only on three occasions the reattachment to the trapezium was achieved.

The only flight pilot that flew it was McDonell’s Edwin Scott.

Both units are shown in museums, one in the Wright-Patterson (Ohio) and the other at the Strategic Air and Space Museum in Ashland, Nebraska.

Despite its strange look, it flew reasonably good and the USAF continued the study of parasite aircrafts after the cancellation of the program, with even more strange aircrafts.

Here you can find an interesting video of the XF-85 “Goblin” that shows the difficulty of the reattachment.

At the beginning of each new year, we usually have all kind of purposes to improve those aspects of our lives, that have not left us completely satisfied during the last year. Naturally this year couldn´t be an exception and now we all have prepared our list of good intentions for this year.

The engineer and the manager

After the Christmas holidays and starting with the New Year, we reach to number four of the weirdest aircrafts in history. And the one we have choosen for today is really a weirdo. It is the Vought V173 “Flying Pancake” designed by Charles H. Zimmerman, a notorious aeronautic engineer who worked on the concept of the disk shaped aircraft. This kind of configuration tried to avoid the adverse effects of the induced drag caused by a short wing aspect ratio with vortexes generated by the long propellers located in the tips. The original prototype was built of wood and fabric and was powered by two 80 HP engines spinning propellers that were taken from a F4U Corsair! Although later these were changed for others with a special design. In order to clear the ground on land, the aircraft had a standing angle distance of 22 degrees, what gave this aircraft almost VTOL capabilities.

The first flight of the V-173 was on 23 November of 1942 and had vibration problems due to the complex gearboxes that drove the propellers. During 1942 and 1943 190 the test flights that were performed showed the plane’s easy maneuverability and low speed qualities (even Charles Lindbergh flew it and assured this).

Unfortunately, like many other projects of this time, it was surpassed by the modern jet fighters. The last flight was in 1947.

A V-173 is still preserved in the Smithsonian.

This is a link to a Youtube video where different test phases are shown.

When we talked in previous posts about the specialists, I don’t think that any of you thought about the importance that these people have in the daily workout of a company. These men and women are a collective of which the direction board is very proud of, but they do not pay any attention to them. Although no one explicitly say it, the underlying message is that “these people have so much fun with what they do that they are sufficiently rewarded”.

The Guardian of the Word

We reach today number five on our list of unusual aircrafts with the Caproni Stipa. Developed by Luigi Stipa and manufactured by the Italian aeronautic company Caproni this experimental aircraft with its ducted propeller (distant precursor of the turbofan), flew for the first time in October of 1932. Despite its ridiculous appearance (it was called ‘the flying barrel’) it performed well, but due to the big aerodynamic drag its maximum speed did not exceed 131 km/h. However its landing speed was extremely low (70 km/h) requiring a very short runway for landing.

It had a wingspan of 14.3 meters and an overall length of 5.5 m. This double seat aircraft had a takeoff weight of 800 kg and was powered by a De Havilland Gipsy III 120 HP engine.

Only one prototype was built and the project was abandoned due to its limited performances.

Although the prototype does not remain, in 1988 a 3:5 scale replica was built in Australia (built like this so that it could be included in the ultralight category) and flew in 2001, again confirming the excellent maneuverability characteristics pointed out by the Italian test pilots 69 years ago. Currently this aircraft is in an Australian museum.

This is a YouTube video where you can watch one of the flights of the Stipa.

In one of our previous posts we spoke about the specialists. I will dedicate an upcoming chapter to them where I will tell you how they face their daily and special task, but today they will help us to introduce you all a very special figure. The Guardian.

The ASG

We reach today number six at our list of aircrafts that surprise you with the Goodyear GA-468 "Inflatoplane". As you could imagine from its name it was an inflatable aircraft designed for rescue operations, which could be folded into a little container of 1 cubic meter.

Incredible as it may seem, this aircraft was able to fly and it just had to be inflated with a pressure of 25 psi. In flight the pressure was assured with a pressure intake from the engine in order to maintain the structural integrity.

The first versions were equipped with a 40 HP engine and flew at a speed of 116 km/h with a range of 630 km. Its maximum takeoff weight was 110 kg and it needed only 90 meter runway.

It was designed and built in only 12 weeks in 1956 with the idea that it could be launched behind the enemy’s lines in a container to serve as a rescue vehicle to crashed pilots.

The project did not catch on because, as a military said:  “there was no military use for an aircraft which can be shot down with a bow and arrow”.

Only twelve units were built, but Goodyear continued the development until 1973. There are still two units, one of them in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC.

This is a YouTube video showing this curious aircraft.

Our number 6 on the list of the weirdest aircrafts in history is for the Goodyear "Inflatoplane".

In our last entry we left a short test with some simple questions that should help you to know if you have the basic qualities that are required to reach the highest professional aims in your company. Now, let’s take your answers and go through them.

Oculus reparo!

At number seven in our list of different aircrafts, today we find the J7W1 Kyushu Shinden, a Japanese aircraft of World War II which represented a completely new fighter concept as it was built in a "canard" design in which the horizontal stabilizer was on the front of the wing.

This layout has the advantage that the contribution of the horizontal stabilizer to the stability of this fighter is a positive contribution to the lift (ie the lift force of the horizontal rudder helps the wing to support the weight of the aircraft) but in a conventional design with the rudder behind, this contribution is negative. Furthermore, in large angles of attack the rudder stalls before the wing, so it is virtually impossible for the airplane to spin.

However, since the moment of the tail of the vertical surfaces is small, due to the short lever arm, they usually have lateral stability problems.

With a Mitsubishi Ha-43 engine of 2,191 hp and a maximum takeoff weight of 5,200 kg, this fighter was able to reach 750 km/h but it never rended service. Only two prototypes were built, the first of which first flew in August of 1945 when the war was practically over.

The prototype flew well but it had a compensation problem of the huge torque of the engine.

The only unit that survived the war was brought to the United States and we can see it in the National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC.

Here you have a link to Youtube where you can see one of the few flights of the Shinden. Although the quality is bad, it is a great historical document. Note that in one of the takes you can see the propeller blades bent after it hit the ground.

So, our number 7 of the rarest planes of history is for the Shinden.

When you start your professional career you feel somehow lost, wondering how things will develop (as it happened to us in the past). You want to work on something you like, make money, progress, be respected in your work and, later, become a leader in your profession. But all this in nothing more than a letter of intent that has to be carried out. And for that you need a plan. And this is exactly what we are going to talk about today.

¡Oculus reparo!

Letter to my daughter

Today we got to number eight on our "weird" aircrafts list. I have awarded this post to the Convair XFY-1 Pogo, a curious vertical takeoff device which rested on its cruciform tail for takeoff and landing maneuvers in a setting called "tailsitter ". Although the concept had already been studied by the German engineers during World War II, this was the first vehicle that came to fly with this configuration but never passed the prototype stage. This prototype is still kept at the National Air and Space Museum of Suitland (Maryland).

With a maximum takeoff weight of 7,370 kg, powered by an Allison YT40 turboprop counterrotating propeller and 5,500 HP it made its first full flight (including takeoff, transition to horizontal flight and landing) on November 5th, 1954. The stability problems and the landing difficulties, which forced the pilot to look back while trying to keep balanced the aircraft caused that the project was abandoned in the summer of 1955.

At a time when the turbojets almost reached Mach 2, this jet fighter concept with propeller was obsolete since birth but it was still an innovative concept which was continued by the French company SNECMA with its Coleoptére.

Here you have a link to Youtube of one of the few videos that show a Pogo full flight. Enjoy it.

So, our number 8 on our list of ‘weirdest’ aircrafts ever goes to POGO.

Today we are going to do something a bit different and our entry will be a simple letter. A letter to my daughter.

Carta a mi hija

The ethics and the aesthetics

Today we present number nine strangest aircraft in history. This position goes to the English Electric Lightning (later called BAC Lighting, after the integration of English Electric into British Aircraft Corporation). This aircraft was the great British supersonic jetfighter during the cold war capable of reaching a speed of Mach 2, but with a very short action range (250 km in supersonic speed). Since this fighter was a pure interceptor this was not one of the parameters to be optimized.

Usually this aircraft is not on the list of the “weird” aircrafts that you could find online, but it was a really strange concept.

The truncated delta wing planform (not a swept wing), both superposed Avon 301R engines (which reduced in a 50% the front section) and so thin wings that the fuel tanks had to be placed in a bulge in the bottom of the fuselage made this aircraft a really weird one. Since the wings pylons could not bear arms (think about the disposition of the landing gear) all weapons were in the fuselage, including a 30mm Aden cannon and two air to air missiles. Completing the picture two additional fuel pods where located on the wings (!), a single shock wave cone was shared by both engines and the elevator was full control surface (stabilator).

This aircraft flew for the first time in 1954 and served in the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia until the 80’s although until now there are still some in flying conditions around the world.

With a vertical speed of 100 m/s, it had to be a show to see it taking off almost vertically.

What a pity that we missed it.

Here you have a link to Youtube where you can see it.

Our number 9 in the list of the rarest aircrafts in history goes to the BAC Lighting.

Today we will talk here about ethics in business and the commitments that large corporations have (or not) with it, which is an exciting and quite sensitive matter.

Donuts and bonus

We start today our list of the strangest aircrafts in history and we do it with de Dornier DO 335 “Pfeil” which is our number 10. This aircraft whose prototype flew for the first time in September, 1943 and was never produced in series, was a tricky approach of Dornier to the design of a two-engine aircraft with the characteristics of a single engine. With the tandem engine configuration, the aerodynamic drag was considerably reduced and the asymmetry problem in case of a single engine failure could be avoided, as it happens in the multiengine aircrafts that have their engines under the wings.
The crux tail was designed to protect the lower rear propeller from touching the ground during takeoff. With a maximum speed of 763 km/h at 6500 m it was significantly over the allied fighters of the time and it was a very promising craft. Even with a single engine it was able to reach 563 km/h, which is exceptional for an aircraft with an empty weight of 5210 Kg.

This is a link to a Youtube video that shows some images of the time.

Our position number10 of the strangest aircrafts of the history is for the DO335.
In this new entry of our blog we want to start a sweet talk speaking about Donuts, a genuine American product like Coca Cola and in the same way as this soft-drink, Donuts have spread over the years across the world becoming a part our daily life.

We are back!

Since our last blog entry, now almost three months ago, many things have happened, personally as well as professionally. During this hot weather and holidays (for some) we have been thinking a lot about our blog and about the possibility of continuing with it. We had a plenty of reasons for leaving it and only a few to continue and if I have to be honest, the first ones were stronger than the second ones.

However, during this summer break a person that I deeply respect told me something like this: “If you abandon the blog definitely, you will be betraying the spirit you were standing for, that is, it is not the destination that counts, but the journey”. And he was right.

¡Hemos vuelto!

The Goodbye

Finally we reach the first position in our top ten ranking list and how could it be otherwise, this position is for the Wright brothers, Wilbur (1867 – 1912) and Orville (1871 – 1948). They were the first to develop an aircraft heavier than the air, that was able to fly controlled in its 3 axes and powered by an internal combustion engine. The flight of the “Flyer” took place on the Kitty Hawk beaches December 17, 1903, although they had previously tested different gliders, they built an aerodynamic tunnel and they even built their own engine with the invaluable help of their partner and mechanic, Charlie Taylor, who developed it in 6 weeks.

Their spirit and initiative make that Orville and Wilbur Wright will stay in the first position forever.
Today, as we reach the end of our list, it is time to say goodbye. During eleven weeks we have tried to give a unique message for a very special kind of people. As we said in the presentation of our blog, we have tried to address, on the one hand to those people who, despite their wide professional experience, still have the ability to get excited, and on the other hand, to the youngest engineers which, after finishing their studies, find a whole new world full of uncertainty.
